(Bloomberg) -- Hello from Davos, Europe’s highest town and the location for the gathering of billionaires, politicians, bankers, academics and executives that is the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting.



Will Donald Meet Greta?

The diversity of views at Davos 2020 will be thrown into sharp relief on the opening day as President Donald Trump and climate change campaigner Greta Thunberg compete for the spotlight.

Thunberg was set to arrive on Monday via train, while Trump is expected to land on Tuesday in the presidential helicopter, Marine One. View his 2018 arrival here.

Thunberg speaks on an 8:30 a.m. panel and then again at 1 p.m. Those appearances will dovetail Trump’s 11: 30 a.m. keynote speech.

World leaders, chief executives, thinkers and celebrities are gathering in the Swiss mountain town of Davos for the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting.

The event, which begins on Tuesday, has earned a reputation for high-altitude pontificating as the global elite gather to pitch their takes on topics picked by WEF founder Klaus Schwab, from deglobalisation to the fourth industrial revolution.

This year, as the WEF marks its 50th anniversary, a new urgency hangs over the Alpine town. The prospects for trade and global economic growth, tech companies (feted at previous meetings but now in regulators’ sights), the future of multilateralism and the geopolitical order all face growing challenges.

US President Donald Trump has decried climate "prophets of doom" in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where sustainability is the main theme.

He called for a rejection of "predictions of the apocalypse" and said America would defend its economy.

Mr Trump did not directly name the teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg, who was in the audience.

Trump meets Pakistan, Iraq leaders before leaving Swiss summit for U.S.
The president told reporters before he left that he has a plan to handle the arrival of a deadly coronavirus in the United States.

Jan. 22 (UPI) -- U.S. President Donald Trump met with Pakistani and Iraqi leaders and spoke to the press before leaving the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday.

Wrapping his two-day visit to the 50th annual gathering, Trump held bilateral meetings with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and Iraqi President Barham Salih on the sidelines of the event.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said Trump and Khan had a wide-ranging, hour-long discussion that addressed measures in Pakistan to remove itself from the Grey List of nations suspected of money laundering and terrorist financing by the Paris-based Financial Action Task Force, an agency set up by the G-7 heads of state.

16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg is now known to millions around the world for her impassioned and fiery address to world leaders at the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit, and the protest she held outside the Swedish Riksdag in August 2018, which led to the ‘School Strike for the Climate’ movement around the world.

And she comes from a remarkable Swedish family, with music at its heart.

DAVOS-Venezuela Guaido calls for halt to 'blood gold' flow

DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido said on Wednesday that the government needed to halt the illegal flow of gold out of the South American country and sanctions might be needed.

"The first thing to do is to stop the illegal traffic of gold. We need to protect indigenous population. It is blood gold," Guaido said during an address to the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.

"Maybe there is a need for sanctions," he said in comments relayed through an interpreter, adding that Venezuela's neighbour Colombia was already helping.

Trump commented on Venezuela on Wednesday, he said he looked for positive changes.

OTOH, I won't ignore reality, many people think President Juan Guiado is importent as a President, a joke.  I'm not saying I agree with that assessment.

This past weekend, Guiado was actually welcomed in Colombia with the carpet treatment as any other head-of-state would be, walking past troops and band music.
