Alan Dershowitz, the high-profile attorney who recently joined President Donald Trump’s impeachment defense team, told CNN on Sunday that Trump had to convince his wife, Carolyn Cohen, about joining.
Dershowitz told the network in an interview that the president called his wife to sell her on the idea of her husband presenting their argument for "the Constitution" in the impeachment trial.
"My wife thought that it would be better for me to remain independent and not present the argument in the Senate. President Trump spoke to her and said how important it was for the country. And my wife is still quite ambivalent about my role, but she supports me," he said.
CNN reports that Dershowitz was reluctant to get involved in Trump’s impeachment trial, and that the White House has spent the last few weeks pressuring the attorney to join Trump’s team. Dershowitz told CNN on Sunday that although he will present the legal team’s argument for the constitutional criteria for impeachment, which he said, “could be the most important argument on the floor,†he won’t be involved with the legal team’s day-to-day activities.
