Mortality rate is at 2-3%, significantly less than that of SARS which based on demographic approached generally 10%

Yep. Many people think that all “common colds” are the result of a rhinovirus and that is the most common cause, but many other viruses cause what we think of as common colds including coronaviruses, adenoviruses and non-polio enteroviruses.

China is turning to potentially risky measures to track down more patients of a coronavirus outbreak that has killed at least 1,000 people.

They are now stopping the sales of cough medicine to flush out coronavirus patients as the number of infections from the new virus soared to cross 45,000 as of Monday (Feb. 10).

At least three Chinese cities announced in the past week that they would stop the sale of medicines for fever and cough, two of the major symptoms for the new virus, so that people will go to hospitals for treatment instead of self-medicating and staying home.

Other symptoms of the virus include muscle ache and shortness of breath, which can then progress to more severe respiratory distress.

Hangzhou, an eastern city of almost 10 million that is home to Alibaba and many other Chinese tech giants, announced on Friday (Feb. 7, link in Chinese) that on the advice of its coronavirus management team, all pharmacies in the city would stop selling fever and cough medications effective the next day.

The measure will apply as long as the city remains at the highest level of public health alert level. “Citizens with these symptoms should go to the hospital as soon as possible,” the notice said.

Following Hangzhou, Ningbo and Sanya (link in Chinese), two southern Chinese cities with a combined population of nearly 8.6 million, also announced over the weekend they would halt the sale of the two medicines, to better track and treat the coronavirus.

Coronavirus evacuee in Texas diagnosed with virus, marking 15th case in US: CDC

An American evacuee who arrived on a State Department-chartered flight last week from Wuhan, China — the epicenter of the deadly coronavirus outbreak — is now the 15th confirmed case of the virus in the U.S., federal officials said on Thursday.

The patient, who was not identified, is one of the evacuees under federal quarantine at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

The coronavirus has infected more than 60,000 people across 26 countries after first being discovered in China’s Hubei Province, and yet North Korea, which shares a border with the country where more than 59,000 of those cases and over 1,360 deaths have been reported, claims it does not have a single illness.

Unverified reports about a quarantined person allegedly being executed by the country after visiting a public bath have emerged, as well as a potential first confirmed case, but the government remains steadfast in denying that the virus has reached its borders, which many experts have cast doubt on.

“There is no way that North Korea is not being impacted by the coronavirus — they are clearly lying as they don’t want to show any weakness or that there is any threat to the regime,” Harry Kazianis, director of Korean Studies at the Center for National Interest, told Fox News. “Considering how there are many porous sections of the North Korea-China border — and how the Kim regime depends on illegal trade to survive — it is clear the virus has come to North Korea.”

'Black swan' coronavirus to slam economy 10 times harder than hurricane

The accelerating spread of the coronavirus is taking an unexpected toll on the global economy, making it a black swan event, according to Alibaba CEO Daniel Zhang.

The number of new cases surged by more than 15,000 to at least 59,804 Thursday after Chinese authorities began using a new reporting method. Additionally, the death toll climbed by 254 to 1,367.

“The outbreak is having a significant impact on China’s economy and may potentially affect the global economy,” Zhang said on a company earnings call, explaining his use of the term "black swan," popularized in Nassim Taleb's book of the same name about catastrophes so unlikely they are completely unforeseen.

“The temporary hit from the virus outbreak should be about 10 times as large as the disruptions from a major U.S. hurricane,” wrote Zach Pandl, a strategist at Goldman Sachs. He says the virus’ outbreak, which has paralyzed economic activity in China, will reduce annualized global output by 2 percentage points.............

A week or two ago I saw that electronics contract manufacturer (e.g. iPhone) Foxconn was possibly going to start manufacturing masks. Some Chinese CMs have dubious quality (they treat production employees poorly and consequently have very high employee turn-over), but I think Foxconn has good quality.

OTTAWA—Canada will aim $6.5 million at research on stopping the spread of the novel coronavirus, after co-ordinating with researchers around the world on tackling the outbreak.

Representatives of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) are returning from two days of talks with the international research community at a World Health Organization forum in Geneva, Switzerland.

There, more than 300 scientists and researchers mapped out a plan to answer the questions that linger about the virus and agreed on a set of research priorities.

HIGH sulphur dioxide levels in quarantined Wuhan and Chongqing could signal mass cremations, it’s been claimed.

Satellite maps in recent days have detected alarming levels of SO2 around Wuhan which is the epicentre of the outbreak.

The city of Chongqing, which is also under quarantine, also has high sulphur dioxide levels.

Scientists believe this is produced when bodies are cremated but also when medical waste is incinerated.

But some social media users who have probed the maps are convinced it is a sure sign of large numbers of dead bodies being burned on the outskirts of the city.

Chinese authorities have ordered that coronavirus victims should be cremated in low-key funerals and bans large public gatherings.

Earlier this month it was decreed that bodies should be “cremated close by and immediately”.

The cliché is that the Chinese ideogram for “crisis” combines “danger” and “opportunity.” (This is not entirely true.) It’s widely believed that the “real” infection and death rates in China are five to ten times higher than the official rates. (And the official rates jumped from around 45,000 to over 60,000 yesterday.) Much has been written about how the pandemic is a grave threat to China’s Communist leadership. Slow growth was already threatening the nation’s house-of-cards banking system, and the pandemic.

But Xi Jinping may also be thinking of it as an opportunity. Remember that Xi is part of political party that killed an estimated 65 million of its own people, and was happy to put a couple of million Uighers in concentration camps in order to reeducate them about their racial inferiority to the Chinese. They had to hold off tiananmening a few thousand Hong Kong activists only because too much of the world was watching and too much money is at stake.

But now? Now they’ve got tens of millions of people under quarantine, they’re reportedly burning thousands of bodies that died from the virus without reporting them, so many that they’re showing up on satellite photos mapping particulates. With the quarantine and even heavier than usual censorship, the communist government has ideal circumstances for score-settling and purging “subversive” elements.

An American biotech company says it created a coronavirus vaccine three hours after getting access to the virus' genetic sequence in mid-January, and now scientists are racing to get the vaccine on the market in record time.

Inovio Pharmaceuticals is based in Pennsylvania, but scientists in its laboratory in San Diego made the discovery.

"We were able to rapidly construct our vaccine in a matter of about three hours once we had the DNA sequence from the virus available because of the power of our DNA medicine platform," Dr. J. Joseph Kim, Inovio's president and CEO, told FOX Business. "Our goal is to start phase one human testing in the U.S. early this summer."

With the accounts of the virus mutating, a vaccine might be as effective as one against the common cold: sometimes good, sometimes ineffective. We'll see.
