Puerto Rico Struck by 5.8-Magnitude Quake
« on: January 06, 2020, 01:10:59 pm »
Spectrum News 13 1/6/2020

A 5.8-magnitude quake hit Puerto Rico before dawn Monday, unleashing small landslides, causing power outages and severely cracking some homes. It was one of the strongest quakes yet to hit the U.S. territory that has been shaking for the past week.

•   Homes have been damaged

•   Boulders are blocking roads

The quake struck at 6:32 a.m. (1032 GMT) just south of the island at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Service. There was no tsunami threat, officials said.

Power outages were reported in some parts of Puerto Rico following the quake, Angel Vazquez, emergency management director for the southern coastal city of Ponce, told The Associated Press.

"This is one of the strongest quakes to date since it started shaking on Dec. 28," he said. "It lasted a long time."

Is the current Governor who will be asking for Federal aid another Trump-Basher?

Take a guess....

Well, this doesn't sound too awful:

Quote
Vázquez stated she wants to recover Hurricane Maria relief funds and review all government contracts are being managed correctly and free of corruption. She said she wants to work with President Donald Trump to help the island of Puerto Rico and its 3.2 million citizens. She stated all contracts signed by Ricardo Rosselló would be reviewed. At the same time, HUD (Housing and Urban Development) stated that hurricane funds would be delayed to Puerto Rico due to corruption, and incapacity to absorb funds for projects, respectively.

But as Sheikh Ilderim said, "If you will cook the meal with words, I will promise an ocean of butter." Her actions will provide meaning to her words.

Correct.  And...she'll have to play to the populists in PR, her hold on that office is tenuous.  This is not a good sign.

It's Trump's fault and it should be one more line item for his impeachment.  Why every red blooded Democommie knows it is his fault, for had he been implementing climate change policies, this event would never have happened.

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit Puerto Rico a day after another quake rocked the island

CNN Hollie Silverman By Joe Sutton and Hollie Silverman 1/7/2020

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake and several other strong tremors rocked Puerto Rico Tuesday morning, just one day after a 5.8 magnitude quake shook the island, according to the US Geological Survey.

Power outages and damage to homes and buildings were reported near the island's southern coast, though the extent wasn't immediately clear.

The 6.4 quake struck at 4:24 a.m. local time (3:24 a.m. ET), centered just off Puerto RIco's southern coast, about 6 miles south of Indios town, the USGS said. The mayor of Guayanilla, just north of Indios, reported damage to homes and a church. There were no immediate reports of injuries, Mayor Nelson Torres said in a phone interview with CNN affiliate WAPA.

On Tuesday, Governor Wanda Vazquez declared a state of emergency - activating the island's National Guard to help with recovery efforts.

The earthquakes knocked out Puerto Rico's main generating facility, the Costa Sur plant, and damaged other infrastructure.

Officials have said that power is unlikely to be restored to the island's three million population until this weekend, and it will take at least a year to repair the Costa Sur plant.

Until Tuesday, the plant supplied about a quarter of Puerto Rico's power, AEE electricity agency head Jose Ortiz told local media.

I really do feel bad for the people of PR.  Their government is horrible and they are conditioned to think they will be taken care of these incompetents.

Puerto Rico...my hearts devotion
May it sink back in the ocean
Always the hurricanes blowing and the population growing.

Thank you West Side Story for a song that tells the story...in the 1960's.  Doesn't sound like there has been a change.

Magnitude 6 Shock Rocks Quake-Stunned Puerto Rico

A magnitude 6.0 quake shook Puerto Rico on Saturday, causing further damage along the island’s southern coast, where previous recent quakes have toppled homes and schools.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit 8 miles (13 kilometers) south of Indios at a shallow depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers).

Puerto Rico's Electric Power Authority said outages were reported across much of southern Puerto Rico and crews were assessing possible damage at power plants.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Your analogy of ice floes/blocks at break-up is pretty close, really. Looking at the myriad fault blocks on the island, it's pretty close. The concern is that when the shuffling's done, will there be one major stress point left to let go, or will they all be rattled down to a lower stress state? If the former, this is just a warmup to a major event, if the latter, this could be a good thing, with relatively minor events instead of a big one.
