This is one of those times I wish Trump had been silent. Tempers are running hot in Iraq. The govt is dominated with shia muslims the same branch of islam as in iran.

Also, the USA doesn't stay if we aren't wanted. If Iraq says get out we will, but then what about the Kurds and sunni muslims and few remaining Christians.

All in all it would be better to let our diplomats do their double speak for awhile until things settle down.

I think that's really what's going on there.  The militia and political parties that are getting massive financial support from Iran are pushing Iranian interests, but the rest of the country is still strongly anti-Iranian.  And if we leave, they know that Iran will end up running their country.   So we're going to have to see how it all comes out when they start taking votes that actually matter.

Think about the Philippines. They wanted us to leave, even though we had liberated them during WWII, and we left.

These threats are contradictory to his formal announcement about the military strike that killed Suleimani.  During his speech to the American people he mentioned that the Iranian people were good people.  His threats do nothing but alienate people who otherwise approve of the assassination.  But once you start threatening world cultural sites I wouldn't expect support.
