Michigan Independent Rep. Justin Amash, who left the Republican Party in July, risks splitting votes with the Democratic nominee in a potential reelection battle if he decides to remain in the race.
The Cook Political Report moved the rating for Michigan's 3rd Congressional District from "toss up" to "lean Republican" after Amash cast his votes for both articles of impeachment against President Trump last week.
According to Cook, Amash’s position on impeachment and general anti-Trump posturing, along with freshmen Democrats pushing for him to become an impeachment manager in a Senate trial, put him in a situation in which he and the Democratic challenger would split votes with one other in the general election. Michigan gives third-party candidates, such as Amash, a July deadline to file their campaigns.
