Don’t Count on Romney

David Ignatius must be kidding:

Who might deliver us from this national train wreck? Who could restore a sense of balance to the Senate trial so that, whatever its outcome, it doesn’t feed Trump’s false narrative of victimization and populist rage? There’s one obvious answer: Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee and custodian of what remains of his party’s moral and political balance.

Counting on Mitt Romney for political courage and moral leadership is always a bad bet. Romney has a very safe seat in Utah, so in theory he could afford to take risks, but taking political risks is exactly what Romney never does. He is a consummate opportunist, and he has spent the last decade and a half pandering to anyone and everyone to advance his political career. Romney is not the politician you’re looking for if you want someone who will take a principled stand on, well, anything. If he is the “custodian” of the GOP’s “moral and political balance,” they are truly lost.

Goofy. This "conservative" is saying that we cannot count on Romney to give legitimacy to an "impeachment" that is bereft of substance, politically motivated, voted and supported by one party with bipartisan opposition, and executed in an unconstitutional manner.

It is no surprise that traditional conservatives have been inert in terms of their ability to hold back incremental socialism.  The other side makes no distinction between the law and politics, which is why Trump stands indicted to begin with. The entire law enforcement apparatus in this country, including the CIA, FBI and Justice Department was weaponized to advance the agenda of the Democrat Party, and now it is Trump who stands accused of mixing government and politics.

This whole affair simply cannot be given legitimacy. It makes a mockery of our constitution.

That's why the Senate must vote to dismiss the charges summarily WITHOUT a trial.

They should reject them on their face, with the comment that they cannot proceed without actual "evidence" -- of which there is none in the bill of "impeachment".

The point of doing so is not only to acquit the president, but to rebuke the House and restore some integrity to the concept (and process) of impeachment, as defined by the Constitution.

The last time we counted on Romney, we ended up with a second term of Obama.

Most everyone learned not to count on Romney seven years ago.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
