Air Force’s Future Clouded With Space Force On Track To Separate
Loren Thompson

America is getting a sixth branch of its military, to be called the Space Force. Members of the House and Senate Armed Services Committees have agreed the sixth service should be organized within the Department of the Air Force and report to Secretary of the Air Force Barbara Barrett, but the new Chief of Space Operations will be co-equal with the other service leaders sitting on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Proponents of the Space Force say it is now on a trajectory to eventual independence from the Air Force. In historical terms, the impending move is analogous to when the Army Air Service became the Army Air Corps in 1926 after a decade of agitation by air power advocates. The Air Corps went on to become the Army Air Forces on the eve of U.S. entry in World War Two, and subsequently achieved full independence from the Army in 1947.
