Breaking police officer, two suspects, three civilians dead in Jersey City shootout, officials and law enforcement sources say.

One police officer was killed and two others were shot during what a law enforcement source described as an "ambush" active shooter situation at a bodega in Jersey City Tuesday, the Hudson County prosecutor said.

There are multiple dead inside the bodega as well, Mayor Steven Fulop said. Law enforcement sources identified the dead officer as a married father of five.

One civilian was also shot. That person, along with the two wounded officers, are expected to survive, officials said. The circumstances of the hours-long shootout remain uncertain and the situation, which forced every public school in Jersey City into lockdown mode, is still highly fluid.

The son of former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik was one of the law enforcement officers who fatally shot armed suspects who opened fire on police and civilians in Jersey City, N.J., on Tuesday.

Mayor Steven Fulop tweeted Tuesday night that authorities came to that conclusion based on their ongoing investigation into the shootout that left three civilians, a detective, and the two suspects dead.

“Based on our initial investigation (which is ongoing) we now believe the active shooters targeted the location they attacked,” Fulop wrote of the shootout in the Greenville section of the city.

Based on review of CCTV footage, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said Wednesday morning that two suspects targeted the JC Kosher Supermarket on Martin Luther King Drive after they fled a deadly encounter with Det. Joseph Seals. However, the mayor did not clarify why the grocery store was a target and law enforcement officials say the exact motive of the heavily armed suspects, who were shot and killed by police, remains unclear.

Boy, the computer shut down when I was posting from the Daily Mail,

Policeman/Detective Seals was investigating the murder of Michael Umberger who died this past Saturday. Seals was actually in the nearby "Protestant Cemetery" where he was killed. I think this all sounds very curious.

From that cemetery, Seals saw the stolen U-Haul <---- connected to the Michael Umberger murder.

From there a confrontation occurred and Seals was actually killed in that cemetery? It's all there in the Daily Mail story, this has now gotten curious.

Sad that it's a UK media outlet giving us more detail than American press.  Apparently, this started with an investigation into a cab driver's murder which occurred on Saturday and not at the store.  And by the way, is the store a Kosher market or a convenience store (bodega)?  I keep hearing different descriptions and that muddies the waters too.  Is it possible this wasn't a hate crime or terrorism -- maybe a robbery?  Or just that the perps, in escaping the shooting of the detective, ended up at the market?

Maybe the press conference will clear things up.  But the way our media releases information (or maybe misinformation?) just causes more confusion and anxiety.

A suspect involved in a prolonged firefight in Jersey City, N.J., that left six people dead, including one police officer, had published anti-Semitic and anti-police posts online and investigators believe the attack was motivated by those sentiments, a law enforcement official familiar with the case said on Wednesday.

The Jersey City mayor said surveillance footage indicated that the two shooters had targeted a kosher supermarket where most of the carnage unfolded.

On Twitter Wednesday, Mayor Steven Fulop wrote that an “extensive review” of the city’s closed-circuit cameras made it clear “that these two individuals targeted the kosher grocery location” where they opened fire and sparked a gun battle with police officers.

Jersey City Shootout Suspects Identified: Sources

The two people who stormed a kosher grocery store in Jersey City with rifles, killing three people inside and also murdering a veteran detective, have been identified as David Anderson and Francine Graham, four law enforcement sources familiar with the case tell News 4.

Three sources say Anderson was a one-time follower of the group, the Black Hebrew Israelite movement. There was a note with religious writings in the U-Haul he and Graham allegedly drove to the scene. Officials also said there were online postings connected to Anderson's social page with anti-police and anti-Jewish writings. Investigators are looking to see if Anderson himself posted that material.

The new details came shortly after local authorities announced a review of surveillance video clearly showed the market was targeted, though they, along with state and federal investigators, say a precise motive remains under investigation.

The Southern Poverty Law Center had designated this Black Hebrew Israelites organization as a "hate group," but I don't usually trust the SPLC because they have designated a number of conservative and Christian groups as haters when they are not.  But as I read more about this bunch, it seems the SPLC got it right.

Now there are black people -- many of whom I believe are from Ethiopia or the Sudan -- who identify as Jewish and I believe the Jewish community recognizes them as Jews.  These should not be lumped in with this terror group.

I read through their Wiki page. I wouldn't give SPLC too much credit - they claim BHI is ok, but a splinter group that is racist.
