US could send 14,000 more troops to the Middle East to counter Iran: Report

The Trump administration is considering a major boost to its military presence in the Middle East, and could send up to 14,000 troops to the region in an attempt to deter Iran.

The Wall Street Journal, quoting US officials, said on Wednesday that the US government is reviewing new deployments to the Middle East that would include “dozens more ships, other military hardware and as many as 14,000 additional troops to counter Iran”.

A US Central Command official told The National the military does not comment on internal deliberations. But John Rood, the Under Secretary of Defence for Policy at the department, warned of potential “Iranian aggression”.
