Trump Makes Surprise Visit to American Troops in Afghanistan on Thanksgiving

President Donald Trump visited Afghanistan for the first time on Thanksgiving Day with a surprise visit to an airbase in the country to meet American troops.

Trump walked in to Bagram airbase unannounced as troops looked up from their Thanksgiving dinner.

“Alright, who wants some photos,” said one of the officers accompanying Trump into the room. Everybody stood up and cheered.

“You’re very special people … you don’t even know how much the [American] people love and respect you,” he told the troops.

Trump delivered a speech to the troops, touting recent U.S. military victories in Syria, according to a live stream.

Newsweek, CBS's Mark Knoller, et al., were reporting before the fact that Trump was spending yet another weekend golfing. The Newsweek reporter had to kind-of, sort-of apologize for not waiting for the facts.

The Newsweek reporter who published an inaccurate story about President Trump's Thanksgiving Day plans has been fired. The outlet's original story claimed the president only planned on tweeting and golfing during his holiday break, neglecting to mention his trip to Afghanistan.

Newsweek’s Jessica Kwong, whose Twitter handle identifies her as a political reporter "covering Trump administration and family," initially published the article Thursday morning, before the president's trip to Afghanistan was announced publicly. The story's initial headline was, “How is Trump spending Thanksgiving? Tweeting, golfing and more.”

“Newsweek investigated the failures that led to the publication of the inaccurate report that President Trump spent Thanksgiving tweeting and golfing rather than visiting troops in Afghanistan," a Newsweek representative told the Washington Examiner. "The story has been corrected, and the journalist responsible has been terminated. We will continue to review our processes and, if required, take further action.” ...

Giving the appearance that Trump was in Florida was part of the cover for his trip - not exceptional - so making an error on his location was excusable. What was NOT excusable was politicizing his supposedly staying in Florida. And getting egg all over the publication's and editor's "faces".

Frankly, given how normal using cover would be for such a holiday visit, both the "reporter" and the editor(s) who approved the story should have known to be careful. As for the sour-grapers harping on this being Trump's first T'giving visit to Afghanistan, regular visits would be a pattern around which terrorists could plan, i.e., would be foolish.
