I remember my first night in boot camp well.  All the companies were gathered in some big auditorium and some first class P.O. was reading a list of things to do, watch out for, and, of course, they were all "you will" types of things.  At one point some kid raised his hand to ask a question.  The P.O. asked him what his question was to which this kid replied: "sir, you can't make us do that because we are protected by the Constitution.  The old first class put his lists down, took off his glasses, and said to the kid: "son, you are in the U.S Military now and you are no longer protected by the Constitution, you are protected by the Uniform Code of Military Justice -- and their is no justice."

A military cannot run effectively on civilian "civil rights."  That's the way it is and always will be.  Because of the nature of the business they engage in, having people balking at doing things because their "rights" are pushed to the side will get lots of people kiilled.  On the other hand, where that type of system exists, power hungry individuals can abuse their positions simply for sadism in them.  That is the where the problems arise.
