A sustainable startup thinks it can convince New Yorkers to give up the Anthora, the staple blue-and-white coffee cups used by city diners for decades. There’s no going after the Anthora’s legacy — the creators of the rival vessel are instead attacking a different aspect of its character: that plastic top.

“Say goodbye to wasteful lids with Unocup,” reads the lid-less, all-paper newcomer’s Kickstarter campaign. “Unocup is the new to-go paper coffee cup that replaces plastic lids, and creates a healthier Earth with cleaner oceans.”

Not only is it ugly as all get-out, it looks like it's begging to spill hot coffee on a necktie.

Better idea:  Give discounts to customer who bring their own mugs!  I had a really nice coffee vending machine at work (it ground the coffee beans fresh and had an Espresso option), and it knocked a nickel off the price if it detected a mug inserted into the delivery hole.  A little message would come on the price display that it detected a mug.

I had all sorts of travel mugs with lids and such.  Still have them somewhere, but my get up and go got up and went.  No commute.

I love that blue cup! It’s iconic! It’s in all the movies and tv shows filmed in Manhattan.

People get that cup as a souvenir.

Don’t get rid of that cup. Oooh, this frosts my cupcakes.
