70-year-old dies in protests: Hong Kong minister attacked in London

Friday, November 15, 2019

The protests in Hong Kong are getting more and more intense. Now a second man is dying on the brink of increasingly violent clashes between protesters and government advocates. In London meanwhile the Minister of Justice is being attacked.
The protests against the Hong Kong government have reached a new level of escalation. According to the leadership in the Chinese Special Administrative Region, Justice Minister Teresa Cheng was attacked and injured in London by demonstrators. That would be the first direct confrontation between a Hong Kong member of the government and the demonstrators – and abroad. Cheng was in the British capital to promote Hong Kong among other things as a business metropolis. China formally appealed in Britain and demanded that the alleged perpetrators be held accountable. According to the Hong Kong government, Cheng has suffered "severe physical injury." The Chinese Embassy in London said Cheng had been pushed to the ground and injured by the hand.

In Hong Kong itself, the situation has worsened in recent days. On the brink of ongoing anti-government protests, there was another fatality. A 70-year-old man succumbed, according to authorities, Thursday night of his serious injury. Local media had previously reported that the man had been hit by a cobblestone on his head in a dispute between anti-government demonstrators and residents on Wednesday. The man had therefore tried with others to clear stones from demonstrators to blockade laid off the street. Other reports said he also made videos and photos.
