Are You Ready For A Catastrophically Cold Winter?

It's been in the teens and twenties for a few days... but being on the backside of that front dropping into the midwest is sucking warm air up this way... We will be in the forties this week.

Well, we're getting that cold snap now, but we too will be in the 40s this coming weekend or early next week.  I'm ok with that because this unusual weather is a temporary anomaly. Now if this was going to last longer, then I would be an unhappy camper. 

Worst winter I was ever in was 1976-1977 when the temperature fell below zero and stayed there for three months. It had snowed, but the snow wouldn't melt no matter what I did.  Even the best ice melters wouldn't work -- you know the ones that say they will melt ice at -15 degrees or something?  Uh....not that winter.   My parents had an old storm door that leaked air.  It froze shut and stayed that way for the whole three months. 

If we get a winter like that, then you will hear me whine.  A couple of days -- I can handle it.

Plenty of Bourbon, not much of a seltzer fan...We have a whole slew of spirits.  Want some Ouzo?

If the wind would die down some, we can resume what we started over the weekend.  We have a bunch of patio furniture we've been storing in the garage because it was too damned hot out, and now we're moving it to the sun deck upstairs...and Mrs. Liberty can put in her succulents.

I loved my down vest when I lived in upstate NY. Kept me warm and I could still work since my arms were free.

Yeah, the zip-up hoodie, the vest, and the coat (Carhartt) are interchangeable... If you're from the far north and used to being out in it, you know the game is to prevent sweating... mix and match swapping layers is how that is done... That vest is an important part of that.

But when the fleece unders are at play, and the Arctic parka replaces the Carhartt... Well, than we're getting serious about things... And @Smokin Joe is getting a shiver.

Winter of 94 is the one that comes to mind... SO much snow... Then it bottomed into the -30s and leveled out at -20 for 3 weeks or so... Locked the snow up tight. I carved steps to get up out of my house, and could walk right onto my garage roof. Was getting really hard to find places to put the snow I was shoveling off the roofs, not to mention plowing anything... Lucky my buddy had a Michigan loader, because that's what finally carved out my driveway.

It is 30 degrees about 30 miles north of Dallas.  Could be in the teens tonight.  Prissy, weighs 7 lbs, sleeps in the bed with us to stay warm.

YIKES! An apartment with a fireplace! Those must be some expensive digs.

I have a fireplace in my house,but never use it. Too much work and I like the central heat with the floor ducts that make the whole house warm,not just a part of it.

BTW,in case you don't know,do NOT burn pine or any other "sappy" woods in your fireplace! People that do end up with houses burned down due to chimney fires.

Front came through last night, sleet and snow the last hour of it.... Light snow off and on all day today... but has cleared off and getting pretty cold now... (Bama)... will see the teens (mid teens or colder in some areas of the mountain)... Wood heater going pretty good, will keep house (core) in mid 60s tonight. The dinning room (lots of windows) will be much cooler.

Following the three historic snowstorms which buried parts of the U.S. last month, sub-zero temperatures are now blasting hundreds of millions of Americans. Winter has arrived early, as predicted by low solar activity, and a meridional (wavy) jet stream flow.

Lows throughout the week will be more like January temperatures — readings below zero are forecast for many U.S. states, and temps down into the teens are even forecast as far south as Texas.

Some Eastern could experience temperature departures some 30F below the seasonal average on Wednesday afternoon, according to CNN meteorologist Taylor Ward.

The Arctic conditions are already having an impact on transportation.

Harsh weather cancelled more than 1,300 flights at Chicago airports alone on Monday, with snow and ice causing chaos on the runways — this Twitter video shows an American Airlines plane sliding off the runway while landing at O’Hare Int. Airport on Monday morning:
