Jeff Sessions gives other Alabama Senate candidates an unexpected victory path

by Quin Hillyer

MOBILE, Alabama -- If reports are correct that former Attorney General Jeff Sessions will forcefully defend President Trump’s Ukraine-related actions when Sessions enters the Senate race in Alabama, it opens an odd avenue in the race for another candidate to exploit.

So far, all the Republicans in the multi-candidate field have gone to almost embarrassing lengths to see who can be the Trumpiest. Perhaps one of them should reconsider. The risky but potentially effective play would be for one to say that new testimony convinces him the impeachment inquiry is warranted, for open-minded analysis of all relevant facts, even if the case for impeachment remains as-yet unproved.

It helps that this also is the most appropriate stance, and that Sessions will be damaging his credibility by not taking it himself. For purposes of pure political analysis, though, let’s set aside what’s ethically right, and look at why this could be a surprisingly smart political play.

Is this another "If [ insert name ] doesn't approve of the House's action vis Impeachment, he loses" article?

I'll reckon the Republican senate contest down in Alabama is now a contest between Sessions and Roy Moore.

  • WE are NOT ok!
I Believe in the United States of America as a Government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation of many sovereign states; a perfect union one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.  I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Constitution; to obey its laws to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.

This is a crucial time in our nation's history. The left has become unhinged and they are threatening the very things that make America great. I'm running for U.S. Senate because we have to fight back. Let's go! http://www.jeffsessions.com

Every elected Republican who has moved against President Trump has been squashed.  To suggest that the path to the GOP AL Senate nomination could be paved by a pro-impeachment stance is sophistry.

I used to like Jeff Sessions...I was happy Trump named him head of the DOJ.  He failed his country, but when so many others have also failed and much more spectacularly, I'm less disappointed in him.  I hope he wins in AL.

As good a summary of my opinion on this as I've seen anywhere.

My first reaction to Sessions running was oh geez after failing us so badly as AG you should just go away. However, he was always a reliable conservative vote in the Senate. While I really would prefer someone a lot more dynamic and a better critical thinker I suppose we could do worse.

Personally, I would prefer Roy Moore after he was treated so badly by the mob.

That would be something wouldn't it?  After all the dogging that the President did.  The mocking and making fun.  If Sessions does I will loose respect for him.
AG William Barr: "I'm recused from that matter because one of the law firms that represented Epstein long ago was a firm that I subsequently joined for a period of time."

Alexander Acosta Labor Secretary resigned under pressure concerning his "sweetheart deal" with Jeffrey Epstein.  He was under consideration for AG after Sessions was removed, but was forced to resign instead.

I agree, and I think Moore wouldn't have any problem standing up to the swamp critters, either.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Here is the thing: Roy Moore is a loser! He lost what could have been an easy pickup.  The Democrats want him to be the nominee again. Far as I'm concern, he is all talk and no action.

Now that people know the whole mess was lies and Russians on Social media, he might have a better chance.

SHould have been, except for Russians on social media paid to smear him, and the allegations of nonsense that immediately blew away after Jones got elected. Now that people have seen what Jones is, and the lies have been dealt with, maybe Moore's odds are more than a little better this time around.
