Murder suspects escape Northern California jail

Two suspects escaped from a Northern California jail early Sunday, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office said.

Santos Samuel Fonseca, 21, and Jonathan Salazar, 20, were being held in the Monterey County Adult Detention Facility awaiting trial on unrelated murder charges, the sheriff's office in a message on Facebook. The two face other felonies, authorities said.

The sheriff's office didn't say how the men escaped, but they said the means of escape is under investigation.

"Northern" California? Monterey is so close to mid way between the Oregon and the Mexican borders. That said, Monterey County is not a rural county with scant resources and facilities. There might be heads rolling down into Monterey Bay over this F-up.

Thornburg believes the inmates found a blind spot in the housing unit and exploited it. He said the two made a hole in a bathroom ceiling and got out in a space between pipes, but escaped the perimeter of the jail through a construction area that did not have the normal secure wiring. Investigators also found some jail issued clothing outside the perimeter, so they did make it outside of the jail.

Thornburg said both men are from the Salinas area and have had gang affiliation to some extent, but were affiliated with opposing gangs.

That they ditched their jail issued clothing suggests to me that they had assistance.

I just don't see either of these bozos getting very far. Especially not the idiot with facial tattoos.

I just hope there is a thorough investigation on how they managed to get the tools to cut through the wall,know where to go,and arrange to have someone pick them up right after the breakout. We all know they had outside help and a ride,or they would already be caught.

I suspect by now they both have shaved heads and are wearing makeup on their faces to lighten the skin and cover the tats. No matter how good it is,it will be noticeable when you are close in broad daylight.

They made a run for the border, how original and what I'm sure the police figured they would do from the minute they escaped. Glad they were caught before they ruined someone else's lives.

I think it was accepted as fact that neither one of these goobers were ever going to change their ways,so it is a given that they would either be captured or killed. This was the life they had chosen,and there was never any danger of either cleaning up their acts and not committing more crimes.

SAN DIEGO —

Two suspected murderers who escaped from Monterey County Jail by busting through a bathroom ceiling last weekend were arrested Tuesday night at the San Ysidro border crossing, federal officials said Wednesday.

The fugitives, Santos Fonesca, 21, and Jonathan Salazar, 20, tried to walk into the United States through the crossing’s PedWest facility about 11:35 p.m., said U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokeswoman Jacqueline Wasiluk. Border officers ran their information through law enforcement databases and were alerted that the two were wanted.
