A lawsuit from Fayetteville about Blackbeard’s pirate ship will go before the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday, and the outcome is expected to have far-reaching implications for businesses and individuals who make money from creating and selling copyrighted works, such as songs, books and pictures.

The Supreme Court’s ruling could define whether people and companies are allowed to sue state governments for copyright violations.

The lawsuit was filed in 2015 by Rick Allen, owner of Nautilus Productions in Fayetteville. Allen says the state of North Carolina illegally published five of his videos to YouTube of archaeological work at the Blackbeard shipwreck as well as a photo he took.
