OTTAWA—One-time and possible future leadership contender Peter MacKay says the failure of Andrew Scheer to convincingly address the question of his social conservative values cost the Conservatives the election.

He offered his critique of Scheer’s campaign performance during a panel discussion Wednesday hosted by the Wilson Center in Washington.

“To use a good Canadian analogy, it was like having a breakaway on an open net and missing the net,” MacKay said.

Their electoral system is different than ours, so, it's apples and oranges to compare but, it seems the Conservatives should have done much better.

There was also, some sort of local squabble there in Ontario, Scheer needed to make peace with some politician and it cost him seats. I think I have that correct.  One doesn't want to give in though, on some core values. And unfortunately, that's what this is discussing, social issues.
