WS Game Seven: Nationals v. Astros, live thread
« on: October 31, 2019, 12:04:02 am »
Will the Astros claim ranking among the dynastic with their second World Series win in three seasons?

Will the Nationals do what's never been done in any sport whose championship is decided in a best-of-seven and win it entirely on the road?

We're about to find out . . . Game Seven is about to get underway in Minute Maid Park . . .

Trivia: Tonight is the fortieth World Series Game Seven in history . . . and the road team has actually won more of them, weirdly enough, including the Astros two years ago . . .

Alex Bregman robs a likely double from Trea Turner by backhanding his leadoff liner . . . two more swift outs and it's Nats nothing, Astros coming up to hit.

Max Scherzer shakes off a two-out walk . . . fly out, ground out, fly out otherwise and it's no score after one full inning . . .

Yuli Gurriel lines a homer into the Crawfords leading off the bottom of the second, 1-0 Astros . . . !!

The Astros follow up with two men on but no further score as Springer hits a sinking liner Soto catches on the shoetop . . .

. . . but they lead 1-0 after two full Game Seven innings . . .

Three and three for the Nats and I notice not one strikeout yet in this game.

1-0 Astros, middle of the third . . .

A base hit and a walk and somehow the Astros can't cash it in, with a little help from some sharp Nats leather on a night it looks like Max the Knife isn't exactly the sharpest blade on the mound . . . the question becomes how much he still has in the tank with that shoulder before the Nats have to go to the pen . . .

1-0 Astros after three full . . .

Anthony Rendon's side-retiring swinging strikeout is the first strikeout of the night by either side.

1-0 Astros, middle of the fourth . . .

Again the Astros put a pair on and again Scherzer escapes. Forget Max the Knife, he's Houdini and David Copperfield tonight so far.

1-0, Astros, after four full . . .

The Nats strand a man on second, still 1-0 Astros after four and a half . . . Gerrit Cole went down to the bullpen . . . Patrick Corbin stirring in the Nats bullpen . . .

Anthony Rendon can't make the big stop on Correa's grounder up the line, it's an RBI single and first and third . . . the Nationals challenge whether Alvarez's foot was off the pad when he was tagged at third (the run would still hold up) . . . the review also gives Patrick Corbin a little extra warmup time in the Nats bullpen, which might be the real reason the Nats called for the review . . . the call stands . . . Alvarez is safe . . . Scherzer strikes Robinson Chirinos out swinging . . . it was the first hit with RISP in their last sixteen tries at home in the Series for the Astros . . .

But it's 2-0 Astros after five full . . . will that be the end of Scherzer's night?

Jay Jaffe (FanGraphs) reminds us tonight is the best Zack Greinke's pitched in a month with one hit, one walk, in six innings.

The Astros get a leadoff pinch single (Jake Marisnick) but Corbin strikes Springer out swinging and Altuve hits into a step-and-throw double play for the side . . .

. . . but the Astros still lead it, 2-0, with Zack Greinke pitching like a master tonight . . .

Anthony Rendon hit a one-out homer into the Crawfords, and after a walk to Juan Soto Zack Greinke's coming out and Will Harris is coming in for the Astros with Howie Kendrick coming to the plate in the top of the seventh.

Greinke gets a huge standing O from the Minute Maid crowd and he earned every decibel of it tonight . . .

2-1 Astros, the Nats hitting with one out in the top of the seventh . . .

. . . and Howie Kendrick hits it down the right field line into the corner and it hit the foul pole!! A two-run homer and the Nats take a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh . . .

Roberto Osuna relieves Will Harris, surrenders a base hit and a walk, but escapes with a ground out and a fly out.

But it's now 3-2, Nats at the seventh inning stretch . . .

Note: Kendrick's homer off the foul pole is the third such homer this postseason. (Aaron Hicks, ALCS; Robinson Chirinos in this World Series.)

Yuli Gurriel's two-out single comes to naught in the bottom of the seventh. The Astros doing tonight what the Nats did in all the Washington games---traffic on the bases but can't get anyone home from there.

3-2 Nats after seven full . . .

Soto RBI single makes it 4-2 Nationals
