Nearly 1 Million Migrants Taken Into Custody in Last 12 Months
Authorities took enforcement action against some 52,000 migrants in September.

The number of migrants taken into custody or turned away at the U.S. southern border totaled nearly 1 million during the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, according to the Trump administration.

The number, which includes migrants apprehended for unauthorized border crossing and those deemed inadmissible at ports of entry, reflects a recent influx of Central American migrants that ballooned during the spring, overwhelming border facilities.

The number of migrants apprehended or turned away at ports of entry peaked in May and has been declining since. In September, authorities took enforcement action against some 52,000 migrants, an 18% dip from August, according to Mark Morgan, the acting head of Customs and Border Protection.
