Young countries need new traditions. And so Tiananmen Square on 1 October evoked the scene when Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949.

Xi Jinping, who holds the same title as Mao, Chairman of the PRC, took his place on the same rostrum.

He swapped his customary Western-style business wear for a Mao suit, and even sounded like Mao when he said: "Today, a socialist China is standing proudly in the world's East."

Hmm..............China's military successes are less formidable
than those of Antarctica; so ignore the boots and mini-skirts!!
