The Navy’s “doomsday” plane wasn’t supposed to be on the ground in Maryland for long. Instead, the E-6B Mercury — a flying communications and command post designed to play a critical role during a nuclear war — should have briefly touched down before taking off again.

But as the hulking aircraft was attempting to perform the maneuver earlier this month at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, things didn’t quite go according to plan.

A US Navy "doomsday" plane designed to survive nuclear warfare has been taken down by a bird.

The hi-tech E-6 Mercury aircraft is built to serve as an aerial base during all-out nuclear war – as a last resort tactic.


But a bird took out one of the plane's four engines during a test flight, causing millions of dollars in damages, according to the Navy Times.

It has previously been described as the "deadliest plane you've never heard of".
