News that the G-7 summit will be held at the Trump National Doral resort in Miami is perhaps the most blatant example of President Trump using his office to boost his personal business interests. But it also speaks to another one of his defining characteristics: his utter shamelessness.

White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney got before reporters and said with a straight face that the resort was chosen only because it was the best location to host the gathering of world leaders — as if there aren't any just as suitable locations that do not happen to be owned by the president.

Mulvaney also claimed that the Doral has agreed to do the event at cost, and so Trump won't profit. But there's no way of ensuring that is the case, and there's certainly no reason to take the word of this White House on it. Regardless, however, even if the resort somehow doesn't profit directly from the conference, it will no doubt benefit from the prestige associated with hosting such an event and be free publicity for the resort on the world stage.

There is something deeply corrupt about a president using his position to directly benefit his business interests. When Trump was elected, he was the first president with such a wide reaching business empire, so any leader with a smidgen of appreciation for ethics would have gone out of his or her way to prevent any conflicts of interest between official duties and private business.

After months of speculation, acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney announced on Thursday that next year’s G-7 meeting will be held at President Trump’s resort in Doral, Florida between June 10 and 12.

The decision to hold the G-7 meeting at the Trump National Doral Golf Club had been bandied about for months -- since Trump made a pitch to have next year’s summit at the resort during August’s G-7 conference in France – and has created controversy amid concerns over the ethics of the president personally profiting off an official government event.

During a rare and contentious White House press briefing, Mulvaney tried to assuage concerns about "emoluments violations" by the president by telling the media that Trump will not make any money off the event. He said the golf club will be providing the location and services at cost.

The Trump Organization donated $151,470 in profits earned from foreign government patronage at its hotels and other businesses last year to the U.S. Treasury, an executive at the company said Friday.

George Sorial, the Trump Organization's executive vice president and counsel, said the donation makes good on the company's promise to give away profits from foreign governments during President Trump's time in the White House.

"Although not a legal requirement, this voluntary donation fulfills our pledge to donate profits from foreign government patronage at our hotels and similar business during President Trump’s term in office," Sorial said in a statement.

NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump’s company said on Monday that it donated nearly $200,000 to the U.S. Treasury to make good on its promise two years ago to hand over profits from foreign governments using its properties.

The Trump Organization said a check for $191,538 sent to Treasury represents profits from embassy parties, hotel stays and other foreign government spending at its Washington hotel and other properties last year. The voluntary donation is up from $151,470 sent a year ago to cover the president’s first calendar year in office.

Trump announced the donation plan before his inauguration two years ago in response to criticism that in refusing to sell off his business, people would suspect his decisions in office would be influenced by spending at his properties and not necessarily reflect the public interest.

 I suppose it could be defended as a distraction, in an "eff you" kind of way.  Even Mukasey, in announcing the Doral location, admitted he recommended against it because of the political optics.  At least it isn't being hidden, like Biden and his denials that his kid isn't trying to cash in on his father's position and authority.

It sounds like you don't understand Trump or the voters that put him in office.

You do understand, I hope, that the democrats fear if he is not impeached and removed, voters might elect him again.

Given the false claims being made about this and how many, even here, seem to be accepting the false claims, it's pretty clear that hatred is capable of pretzellating any "appearance" into something sinister. Trump seems to take very full advantage of the freedom afforded by damned-if-you-and-damned-if-you-don't situations.

I understand that Trump's base is fiercely loyal, and cheers him on in his outrageousness.  But to win re-election, he has to appeal to those who will hold their noses.  Political optics are still important.
