U.S. Navy to upgrade M110 semi-automatic sniper system

The U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command announced in a recent notice posted to the government’s main contracting website that it has plans to upgrade M110 semi-automatic sniper system.

The Naval Sea Systems Command issued a request for information, calling on the industry to propose M110K1 new upper receiver (6.5mm Creedmoor conversion kit) assembly (Technology Improvement).

Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division, Crane, IN intends to modify the existing sole-source contract for technology improvements with Knights Armament Company, 701 Columbia BLVD, Titusville, FL 32780-7902. Knights Armament Company has offered to the Government an improved, capability upgrade to the upper receiver assembly for the M110K1 Semi-Automatic Sniper System (SASS). The new upper receiver is 6.5mm Creedmoor (versus 7.62mm, CLIN 0001 on current contract) and provides longer distance shots and increased range.

Years ago I rebarreled my Rem 700 SA to the Creedmoor's  brother the 6.5x47 Lapua and I was completely satisfied.

My first AR build was a little brother the 6.5 Grendel.

The expanding popularity of precision rifles has been accompanied by discussion about abandoning the 308 Winchester in favor of the 6.5 Creedmoor.  But what about the other match calibers out there?  Specifically 6.5×47 Lapua, 260 Remington, 243 Winchester, 6BR, 6×47 Lapua, and 6 Creedmoor?  As a shooter experienced with these cartridges, I decided to weigh in on the debate.  This discussion is primarily for shooters looking to punch paper or ring steel and should not be expanded to hunting, law enforcement and military usage without consideration for the context.

We’ll look at the benefits of these cartridges over the 308 Winchester as well as hand loading, bullet diameter, and magazine restrictions.
