Will Thames Freeze Again? UK Vulnerable to Cooling Catastrophe

The United Kingdom’s role in the global economy is important. It is the 10th largest export economy in the world. It exported $778 billion USD worth of products and services in 2018. In recent months, fears about a post-Brexit UK economy have gripped the minds of Britons.

But the UK’s economy faces a bigger challenge from changes in climate. Nearly 70 percent of the UK’s land is used for agriculture, and the country depends on its own produce for 60 percent of its domestic needs. Any sharp departure from average temperature levels could cause significant disruption to the economy.

However, unlike the popular narrative that warns us of rising temperatures, the real climate threat to the UK in the next few decades could be from cooling, not warming.

Here is why.

The biggest climatic event that haunted Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries might be coming back to haunt it again in the coming two decades. NASA has predicted a period of low solar activity for the next two solar cycles, technically known as a Solar Minimum.

NASA Sees Climate Cooling Trend Thanks to Low Sun Activity

--- Quote ---The climate alarmists just can’t catch a break. NASA is reporting that the sun is entering one of the deepest Solar Minima of the Space Age; and Earth’s atmosphere is responding in kind.

So, start pumping out that CO2, everyone. We’re going to need all the greenhouse gases we can get.

“We see a cooling trend,” said Martin Mlynczak of NASA’s Langley Research Center. “High above Earth’s surface, near the edge of space, our atmosphere is losing heat energy. If current trends continue, it could soon set a Space Age record for cold.”

The new data is coming from NASA’s Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry or SABER instrument, which is onboard the space agency’s Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite. SABER monitors infrared radiation from carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitric oxide (NO), two substances that play a vital role in the energy output of our thermosphere, the very top level of our atmosphere.

“The thermosphere always cools off during Solar Minimum. It’s one of the most important ways the solar cycle affects our planet,” said Mlynczak, who is the associate principal investigator for SABER.

Common sense would indicate, if we are undergoing "warming," then we have dealt with "cold" in the past.

One of the coldest times in my life, was walking around windy London in  January.

The ice age is coming, the sun is zooming in
Engines stop running, the wheat is growin' thin
A nuclear era, but I have no fear
'Cause London is drowning, and I, I live by the river
