The Justice Department distanced itself from acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney’s claim Thursday that U.S. military aid was tied to Ukraine agreeing to cooperate in an investigation into the 2016 presidential election.
“If the White House was withholding aid in regards to the cooperation of any investigation at the Department of Justice, that is news to us,†a DOJ official told the Washington Examiner.
Mulvaney confirmed Thursday hundreds of millions of dollars in U.S. military aid for Ukraine “was held up temporarily.†Mulvaney claimed that the aid was withheld for three “completely legitimate†reasons: “the corruption in the country, whether other countries were participating in support of the Ukraine, and whether or not they were cooperating in an ongoing investigation with our Department of Justice.â€
But the DOJ distanced itself from Mulvaney’s claims, saying it had never been told and did not participate in this pressure effort.
