Germany warns against early troop withdrawal from Afghanistan

BERLIN (Reuters) - A withdrawal of NATO forces from Afghanistan could see the country falling back under the strict Islamic rule of the Taliban, German Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer said on Saturday.

Kramp-Karrenbauer, who also heads Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) and is seen as the chancellor's most likely successor, said a pullout of foreign troops would be particularly tough for Afghan women.

"I am worried that if we were to ditch our responsibility (in Afghanistan) we will face horrifying images of women being stoned and hanged and of girls not able to attend school and married off," Kramp-Karrenbauer told a gathering of CDU women.

I was just about to post the same thing.  But to my utter astonishment, it turns out the Krauts have about 1300 troops there -- more than any other NATO ally.  Obviously should have more, but at least they do have troops committed.

If the Germans are worried about not having enough "troops" in Afghanistan, let them send some more of their own.

But for American soldiers there, it's time for "auf wiedersehen..."

Some observations.
* Venezuela, which has abundant oil and gas, is 40 air-miles from Florida
while Afghanistan, w/abundant drugs and rubble, is 8,000 miles; yet for
our political schmucks, the latter is vastly more important. Hmm..........
* Perhaps if we quadrupled our 'hearts and minds' strategy that would work?
* Suggest we take a hard look at Alexander's strategy for controllg eastern
Persia (Afghanistan) after Arbela. Following several attempts to subdue that
population, he effectively burnt the forests and tribal compounds to the ground
then re-settled those areas. Hmm.............sounds like a strategy for success?
