It's a tale of a road taken/not taken by Man.
The Fertile Crescent, including the Euphrates&Tigris, Levant
and Phoenicia, were the essence of the Cradle of Civilization.
They began structured agriculture and animal domestication
around 7,000 BC as cultures/societies developed.
Over time, Assyria, Babylon, Sumer, later Greece and Rome emerged;
spawning the High Middle Ages, next the Renaissance and the Enlightenment.
That spanned some 9,000 years during which Man's moral order was
anchored by Natural Law which dictated a compass for right and wrong.
Further he was filled w/a powerful religious sensibility which heightened his
spiritual awareness.
This is confirmed by the Art Man produced over this time period, whether it be
Architecture, Literature, Portraiture, Sculpture and many more.
Then the Enlightenment dawned whose catalyst was the betterment of Man's
condition/existence through materialism.
This altered the previous dynamic forever and for the worse.
Anyone challenging this, contrast the Art produced before the Enlightenment
w/that produced after it.
We have not lost our marbles; rather we have lost our souls.
