Rouhani announces 'third step' in backing out of nuclear deal-- developing centrifuges
Morgan Phillips

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani announced Wednesday that his nation will take its "third step" in scaling back commitments to the 2015 nuclear deal: developing centrifuges to speed up the enrichment of uranium.

“From Friday, we will witness research and development on different kinds of centrifuges and new centrifuges and also whatever is needed for enriching uranium in an accelerated way," Rohani said, as reported by Reuters. "All limitations on our research and development will be lifted on Friday."

Under the nuclear agreement, Iran was allowed to keep restricted quantities of first-generation centrifuges at two nuclear plants. Iran claimed it was enriching uranium only to fuel nuclear power plants, but the development of more advanced centrifuges would allow the country to develop nuclear bombs much faster.
