Seth Ator has been identified as the accused gunman who was shot and killed by police after a rampage in Odessa and Midland, Texas, according to the Associated Press. Police said the shooter was taken down by officers at the Cinergy movie complex in Odessa. The incident began around 3:15 p.m. local time on Saturday, August 31, as an attempted traffic stop along Interstate 20.

Police had originally been looking for two potential gunmen. But after Ator was shot, officials stated that there was no longer a threat of an active shooter. Investigators now say they are confident the gunman acted alone.

Seven victims were killed in Saturday’s rampage, according to federal officials. More than 20 others were injured, several critically. Three law enforcement officers who were injured, including the state trooper who was shot during the traffic stop, are expected to recover.

I'm actually fine with them not divulging the perp's name, as long as there are many witnesses as to what went down.

Why give some loser all that notoriety?

Maybe not released due to embarrassment.

How about if it were the son of the chief of police?

Or someone who had been arrested the day before and allowed by some judge to not do jail time because he was an 'upstanding citizen'?

Police say the shootings began during a traffic stop on Interstate 20 westbound near mile marker 131. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the driver was in a gold vehicle. The car was still moving when the gunman, now identified as Ator, “pointed a rifle toward the rear window of his car and fired several shots toward the DPS patrol unit.” Officials shared during a press conference Sunday afternoon that the weapon was an AR-style rifle.

One of the two troopers was shot and the suspect fled the scene. Police have confirmed that the driver was pulled over for a traffic violation, specifically for a “failure to signal.” Officials added that there was not an active warrant for the man at the time of the traffic stop.

Odessa Police said the gunman continued to fire from his moving vehicle at random people as he drove through Midland and Odessa. He shot a civilian at east Loop 338 and I-20, then headed through the city of Odessa and kept firing.

Could it be he thought he'd killed a cop and had nothing left to lose?

Anderson Davis was grazed by shrapnel on the right side of her chest, according to a GoFundMe page set up on behalf of her family.

More shrapnel knocked out her front teeth and tore a hole in her bottom lip and tongue, the page reveals.

“She is alive,” family friend Haylee Wilkerson wrote in setting up the fundraiser.

    The assault rifle-toting madman who killed seven people and wounded more than 20 others in a roving Texas spree was identified Sunday as Seth Ator.

    Ator, a 36-year-old resident of Odessa, Texas, was first named as the assailant by CBS News, citing law-enforcement sources.

    When his gold Toyota pick-up truck was pulled over for a minor signaling infraction along a stretch of I-20 near Midland, Texas, on Saturday, Ator blasted approaching state troopers, seriously wounding one, authorities have said.

What are the political affiliations of the County Sheriff, Police Dept., and the State Police and Governorship?

Republicans would want to not give the person notoriety and also, avoid future 'Copycats', etc..

Democrats wouldn't because it was one of them, or it was one of their protected groups (illegal or Muslim)

@DCPatriot I grew up and worked in Midland/Odessa almost my entire life (1979 - 2003) it's Conservative...Republican (local as well as the Governor)  Hence the reason there was such a delay in naming the shooter.

In short...we're NOT El Paso.

The murderer per that heavy.com story above, had strong roots to "East Central Texas",  got his criminal record and just for misdemeanors, I don't know what else may be on his record in Waco.



It seems wrongful to try to unload this on Odessa, known for being a "blue collar town and rough around the edges" but I wouldn't get carried away.

I'm trying to see how long he had been in Odessa.

Remember, the El Paso and Aurora Colorado Theater Shooter were basically, not from the places they shot up.

Misdemeanors are pretty lightweight, I don't know the justice system that well, but misdemeanors vs. felonies is a big difference.

But I'd look at a drug angle, a lot of the drugs today, seem to make people crazy but a lot of drugs in the 1970s, probably did too.

Somewhere earlier today, I saw that his situation was disgruntled employee.

Had a discussion yesterday with a long time neighbor-friend. She is now a middle school teacher, previously an RN.

I asked her directly if our youung people are screwed up. She answered Yes, without hesitation.

I mentioned "helicopter" parents, and she replied "Lawnmower" parents. IOW the parents remove all obstacles, risks, dangers, from their lives.

Maybe age 36 is not the same,but nevertheless a mass shooter, has wrong ideas about problem resolution in their lives.

I read about drugs, Aderall, Marijuana, Meth, heroin, oxy, fentanyl.

I listen to younger people at Alcoholics Anonymous.  They seem indifferent to risks of drugs and drink. Almost all talk about their ADHD, their depression, their anxiety, etc.

Cops and paramedics carry Narcan. The entire system they live within, protects them from poor behavior.

There must be some situation in this shooters life, that he didn't like, so he used an entirely wrong metod of coping.

corbe, it is mainly older people who do curbside.  Bob does our grocery shopping and he enjoys doing it and does it every two days or every day.  I can't walk the big Walmart or Kroger store (will likely have knee surgery soon).  If I was by myself, would have to do curbside.  I am glad seniors, others, have that option.

For everything not groceries, Amazon is my store.  I can walk the whole on-line Amazon store without knee pain.

NBC News: The Odessa, TX shooter had recently been fired from his job, law enforcement officials say.

The Odessa American also learned that Ator was fired from a job a year ago for arguing with co-workers and trying to fight people at the workplace. The business alerted the police after he made threats against the workplace.

Mark ,    it pains me to even have to say anything, but clearly you know nothing about guns, or history.  As a retired Law Enforcement officer and ex-military I do have a bit of knowledge.  Every one of the prior shooters has been on some kind of pharmaceutical drug.    The problem is not the weapons, the problem is society and the drug companies.   When I was a kid, we took our rifles to school in hunting season.   And since you probably won't go take a shooting course, the AR type rifles are not "automatic"  - that's already illegal and rare -  they're no different than most other rifles you have seen. They just look different.
  I expect this guy will turn out no different than the others, though you may have to hunt for the truth.

Conspirators would have to be willing to sacrifice their lives - pretty unlikely.

On the other hand, a disturbed individual might consider whats at stake to be worth it. We know just how disturbed many leftists are.

Who knows anymore. It seems anything is possible.

Why unlikely? How many Muslims blow themselves up every year to take out others?

Not unlikely if the person believes they will be seen as some sort of a "hero for the cause" and they are basically a loser, anyway. That's just saying if this is something they do completely willingly, and not either under pressure, lied to about backup, or brainwashed.

It is sad that so many have been killed or wounded.
