Who has the Best Fish Sandwich?

Screw the chicken sandwich...lets talk fish!

In what has now become a well-worn piece of fast food legend, the birth of the drive-thru fish sandwich almost never happened. And just like the pop-top can, the hot dog, and the rubber boot, we have a small town in Ohio to thank for this rather fishy invention.

The year was 1959, and Cincinnati-area McDonald's franchisee Lou Groen had a major problem: his new business simply wasn't driving the revenue he expected. Groen suspected that the area's 87 percent Catholic population was a factor — they weren't visiting his humble hamburger stand on Fridays and during Lent, when Catholics traditionally forgo meat.

Groen had an idea for creating an alternative fish-based sandwich that would appeal to locals, and in the early days of the McDonald's corporation, franchisees could simply pick up the phone and speak to Ray Kroc directly.

According to the Smithsonian, Kroc initially hated the idea of "[stinking up his stores] with the smell of fish." In 1962, Kroc's counter offer was the ill-fated "Hula Burger," which featured a wildly undesirable slice of grilled pineapple with cheese on a bun. After testing both concepts, the newly-minted  "Filet-O-Fish" was the clear winner, and the product became a bonafide hit for McDonald's, eventually selling 300 million of the sandwiches each year.

In the nearly 60 years since the invention of the Filet-O-Fish, fast food fried fish sandwiches have become big business. But which chain does it the best?

Grouper sandwich at Crabby's Beachwalk in Clearwater Beach.  Served fried, grilled, blackened or Caribbean style.

Yeah, I know, it's not fast food and it isn't processed.  But once you have it, you won't want McDonalds.

I am the first McDonald's vote - And while I have not had one in many, many years, I must admit that my own fish sandwich is patterned after the simplicity of the Fillet-O-Fish, a truth that forever stopped me from buying fish sticks and Horton fish patties.

Yes, my efforts to mimic McDonald's Fillet-O-Fish brought me to breaded Alaskan cod which, for ease of use and superior taste replaced all pre-manufactured fish products, to include the Fillet-O-Fish itself.

Credit where it's due.

I voted Burger King, it's passable as edible.  I just buy the filets in a bag at the frozen food sextion and slap with horseradish sauce in between my annual visit to Burger King (4 blocks away).   Someone needs to start an Enchilada Poll.

Good, but there's better.  A bar across from the arena in the Channelside area of Tampa used to have the best ever.  The breading had wheat/bran flakes (Wheaties?) and thinly sliced almonds.  These days it's probably Skipper's.

I just looked at Skipper's menu online.  Smoked gator ribs.  Hmm.  Gonna have to try that next week.

If you like cod, you might want to try Orange Roughy if you haven't yet.

Seen it on the menu but there is so much good stuff I've never ordered one.

After they closed I went on a quest to satisfy my shrimp po boy cravings and I found no one could come close. I used to eat there regularly.

And by the way... It ALL pales compared to my locally caught Kokanee salmon, fried in butter/cast iron laid out open face on a bed of lettuce, Greek yogurt based tartar sauce, and a big slice of tomato on top... all on grilled sourdough.

You lose.

Yeah, I went there sometimes if I happened to be in the area when I was still working.  Very rare that I get down that way now.  Did a storm shut them down?
