Italy PM Conte vows more united Italy as Salvini leaves power

Caretaker Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has accepted a mandate to form a new coalition with a vow to lead a "more united, inclusive" Italy, a week after the collapse of his government dominated by nationalists.

He said Italy should play a leading role in Europe, a marked change from the policies of the right-wing League.

League leader Matteo Salvini triggered the downfall of the previous coalition.

Salvini may be regrouping, he said the government wasn't working.

At first, I thought Salvini had the upper hand but this article makes it sound like he's the one on the out now.  I have no idea but I will keep watch.

The absence of long-lasting governments in Italy, is the norm.

They have a whole lot of parties running, that's part of the problem. That's why they talk about coalitions, I think a five-star coalition.

So, we do really have a 2 party system though, we have multiple parties, Ross Perot made a substantial challenge for a 3rd party candidate. Rare.

Salvini praised for standing up to the EU over mass migration, the “wave of organized crime”
By Arthur Lyons   27 August 2019

Justin Schembri, a local councilor from Malta, has applauded Italy’s populist Interior Minister Matteo Salvini for opposing the European Union’s pro-mass migration policies, and for not allowing “his country to be accomplices” in the “wave of organized crime” that’s taking place on the Mediterranean Sea.

Schembri referenced a screenshot of an article where Salvini reiterated the promise that as long as he is a minister in the Italian government, no one would enter the country without permission. Schembri went on to say that he hoped that Maltese leaders would follow Salvini’s lead.

“That you have a politician ready to put his foot down and defend what he believes in is something to be appreciated,” Schembri wrote in a post on his personal Facebook profile.

And the initial report is from the BBC, probably accurate but a situation to watch nonetheless.

Guardian is way left; but maybe this helps my understanding:

Matteo Salvini: the master campaigner counts cost of strategic errors

Less than a month ago, Matteo Salvini was in his element, drinking mojitos, DJing and posing for countless selfies at Papeete, his favourite beach club in the seaside resort town of Milano Marittima. He had good reason for his ebullient mood: his far-right League party in Italy was nearing 39% in the polls.

Now Salvini is licking his wounds after a gambit to collapse the government and force snap elections backfired, not only derailing his plans to become prime minister but pushing the League out of power and costing the party about six percentage points in the polls.

In an unusually turbulent period even by the standards of Italian politics, the League’s former coalition partner, the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S), retaliated to being dumped by Salvini by embracing the centre-left Democratic party (PD), traditionally a staunch rival. The two parties are now endeavouring to carve out a new parliamentary majority, led by Giuseppe Conte, who resigned as prime minister last week with a stinging attack on Salvini.

And I believe there are Italians newspapers in English on the web, if one is really interested.
