U.S.-Japan trade deal ‘is done in principle,’ Trump says
Politico, Aug 25, 2019

BIARRITZ, France — President Donald Trump said Sunday that a trade deal with Japan “is done in principle.”

“We have been working on a deal with Japan for a long time,” he said at the G7 summit alongside Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and teams from both countries. “It involves agriculture, it involves e-commerce. It involves many things. We’ve agreed in principle.”

“We have excess corn in various parts of our country ... and Prime Minister Abe on behalf of Japan they’re going to be buying all of that corn.”

Trump said he expects to sign the deal around meetings of the United Nations General Assembly next month in New York. “We’ve agreed to every point and now we’re papering it and we’ll be signing it at a formal ceremony.”

Abe said the agreement followed “a series of intensive negotiations.”

“We have successfully reached consensus with regard to the core elements related to agricultural and industrial trade,” Abe said. “We still have some work that needs to be done... but we would like to make sure that our teams would accelerate the remaining work so as to achieve the goal of signing this agreement on the margins of the UN General Assembly in September.”

Japan will lower tariffs on U.S. beef and pork to the same levels as those of Trans-Pacific Partnership members, the Nikkei daily reported Saturday without citing sources.

The U.S. will keep its 2.5 percent tariff on Japanese automobiles, rather than raise it as Trump had threatened, while Japan’s tariffs on imported beef will be lowered gradually to 9 percent from 38.5 percent, the Nikkei reported.

Japan is seeking to stay in Trump’s good graces to avoid costly tariffs and retain positive relations with an ally that ensures its security against the likes of China and North Korea. Japan is also counting on U.S. support as its diplomatic spat with South Korea intensifies.

President Donald Trump announced a new trade deal in principal with Japan on Sunday, during the G7 summit of world leaders in France.

“This is a tremendous deal for the United States,” Trump said after announcing the deal with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. “It’s a, really, tremendous deal for our farmers and agricultural ranchers, and also involves other things.”

The two leaders agreed on a deal in principle, which they expected would be signed during the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September.

After withdrawing from the proposed Trans-Pacific partnership, Trump pursued a bi-lateral deal with Japan since becoming president.

  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...
This is good strategy. We need to start divesting of wannbe global dictator China and spread our eggs across many trading partners instead of one hostile juggernaut with dreams of world empire.
