Zimbabwe police beat protesters in violent crackdown

Zimbabwe police fired tear gas and beat opposition supporters who defied a ban to gather for anti-government protest in central Harare on Friday.

The main opposition group had called off the protests at the last minute, after failing to overturn a police ban.

However, more than a hundred Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) supporters who had already gathered in the city, were violently dispersed by police.
