If conservatives want to keep their guns, they’re going to have to find a way to stop mass shootings

When it comes to gun control, conservatives have been fortunate in their enemies. Every time there is a mass shooting, the left renews its calls for gun control, but it spends a great deal of energy on futile and ahistorical arguments about the wording of the Second Amendment, or making hackle-raising, invidious comparisons with Europe. And when it comes time to actually suggest what should be done, Democrats generally suggest policies recycled from the 1994 crime bill, such as background checks and a ban on assault weapons. There’s little  evidence that these policies did anything to curb gun violence the first time they were tried, which undercuts the calls for redoubling those efforts.

Yes, conservatives have been fortunate in their opponents. But when it comes to gun control, the right has been equally unfortunate in its allies, and in the end, that may matter much more.

To me, the argument needs to turn from how many lives are lost due to usage of guns to how many deaths are prevented through ownership of guns.

The latter is far, far greater but more difficult to describe.

Why should it be up to conservatives to solve multigenerational behavioral problems caused by disastrous liberal policies? And why should they be punished for those failures by losing their freedoms?

Considering that most of the "mass shooters" are not white, why the hell would conservatives (who are mostly white) have to stop mass shootings to keep our guns?   How about law enforcement enforcing the laws already on the books, for a refreshing change.   How about addressing areas of the country where shooters run amuck.... in leftist Democrat-run areas, for starters.   

Nah.... it's not up to us to make law enforcement or leftists do its/their frigging job, so don't even try to put this on our backs.  Won't work.   Let's start calling a spade a spade, for starters.

If you abdicate the chore, you WILL end up with the Second Amendment being repealed, and all privately owned guns being seized by the federal government. 

That is why conservatives should constructively engage with the project of reducing gun violence.

I'm willing to discuss what it will take to stop the lunatics, but I won't give up one inch in the direction of more restrictions on guns.
