Why Socialism, and Why Now?
Victor Davis Hanson

"Socialist!" is no longer a McCarthyite slur.

Rather, the fresh celebrity "Squad" of newly elected identity-politics congresswomen -- Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) -- often either claim to be socialists or embrace socialist ideas. A recent Harris poll showed that about half of so-called millennials would like to live in a socialist country.

Five years ago, septuagenarian Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.) was considered an irrelevant lone socialist in the U.S. Senate -- Vermont's trademark contribution to cranky quirkiness. But in 2016, Sanders' improbable Democratic primary run almost knocked off front-runner Hillary Clinton, even as socialist governments were either imploding or stagnating the world over.

After Clinton's loss to Donald Trump in the 2016 general election, Sanders is back, running as a socialist warhorse, promising endless amounts of free stuff, with those promises suddenly being taken seriously.

With the help of Republican squishes in Congress and the Senate, Obastard was allowed to complete his fundamental transformation of the Nation, and it's seeming more likely every day it's permanent.

The Great American Experiment is over, RIP.

Respectfully, the Great American Experiment ended around 1860.
That year saw the election of Republicans, a progressive party born of the northern mercantile class. They were centralized government types and have controlled the party ever since.
Perhaps even more importantly, that year the Civil War began which decimated the South and
destroyed the Agrarian and Rural Democrats of Jefferson, Madison and Monroe, the only principled conservative party in our political heritage.

--------------------------
No idea what your point is, a 'non sequitur'.
Slavery existed from 1615 till 1865, some 250 years
and we were a British Colony for 180 of those years
which is more than 70% of the time.
Slavery was essentially an excuse for the Civil War as
the North and South had contrary economic/political visions.
The North was protectionist and promoted centralized government
while the South were free traders and supported states rights.
