Opposition Activist Sobol Detained By Police Ahead Of Moscow Protest

Russian opposition activist Lyubov Sobol

MOSCOW -- A prominent Russian opposition activist was detained by police in Moscow on August 3 ahead of a planned protest to demand free elections.

Lyubov Sobol, who is on hunger strike, was detained in a taxi as she tried to make her way to the protest and driven off in a police van.

"On what grounds are you detaining me?" Sobol repeated as police took her to the vehicle.

So, it sounds like more protests in Russia today. As said in the other thread, some reports are these people are protesting over very low-level elections over there and not getting any kind of real opposition running against Putin-back-candidates. The protesters deserve our full support.

Again, it has to be stressed, these elections that they are protesting seem very very low-level like city council, mayor, something like that from my understanding.

Last weekend, arrest numbers went to over a thousand from 300 fairly quickly.

Police Detain Some 600 At Opposition Rally In Moscow

Police have shut off many areas in central Moscow.

MOSCOW -- Nearly 600 people, including a prominent opposition activist, were detained by riot police in Moscow on August 3 after authorities warned they would take “all necessary measures” to stop the unsanctioned rally.

A week after police detained more than 1,300 people at a similar protest in the Russian capital, hundreds of OMON riot police were deployed ahead of the planned protest to demand free elections in Moscow.

The independent political watchdog OVD-Info reported that at least 592 people had been detained.
