Schumer Calls for Amending First Amendment to Limit Political Speech
 

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D.-N.Y., has determined there is too much political speech in the United States coming from sources he cannot abide. So, he stood in front of the Supreme Court on Tuesday, along with Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, D.-Ill., to announce he is backing Democratic New Mexico Sen. Tom Udall's proposal to amend the First Amendment.

The First Amendment — as it now stands — includes 10 unambiguous words about freedom of speech.

"Congress," it says, "shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech."

Schumer and Udall do not like this sweeping restraint on government power. There are speakers whose speech they want to abridge. The Bill of Rights — as correctly interpreted by the Supreme Court — stands in their way. So, they are seeking to change it.

Hitler in writing Mein Kampf, told the world what was on his mind and what he intended to do.  Schumer has just done the same.  Anyone who cannot see where he and the democrats are aiming is terminally stupid, terminally naive, terminally a democrat, hates America. thinks some place like Cuba is better, or just not capable of higher order thinking.  He has just said he doesn't believe in the Constitution and is willing to start dismantling it with restrictions on political speech.

That is the frightening part; the DEMS are willing to dismantle the  Constitution to their liking.  God help this Republic if the DEMS gain the majority in both the Senate and the House.

I'm not sure I understand why Shumer et al are leading with their chin on this.  It reinforces what Republicans have been saying about Rats for years.

I believe I have the answer to that.  It's because the Democrats always want to be the ones making the rules....

for everyone "else".   They will limit the free speech (political or otherwise) of their opposition, but no way no how will it ever apply to themselves.   Just like the two-tier justice system, they will be exempt from the rules they have enacted.

It's because a lot of people don't think this through, and "getting corporate money out of politics" sounds really good to some because it sounds like it is anti-corruption.  Some people do realize that it is really anti-free speech, but conservative messaging on Citizens United has been absolutely terrible.

For me, this is the single most important issue.  More important than even the Second Amendment or immigration.  I'll say this -- the only circumstance under which I'd consider voting for a Democrat over a Republican is if the Republican supported this, and the Democrat opposed it.  It would literally trump every other issue for me.

If the Democrats ever succeed in 'amending' even one small tiny part of the Constitution, then the whole thing is jeopardy. They only want to get the camel's nose under the tent. Then they can shred the whole thing.

How many times did Obama complain about the Constitution and the American system of government was 'restricting' him. He hated it. Obama wanted pure absolute undiluted power, as do all Democrats. This is only the beginning of what Democrats have planned to rebuild America into their Socialist Utopia.

They really have become fascists in every way. They are fascists in the kind of despotism they want to install, as well as the violent means they are willing to use to get it.

Indeed.  Which is why we can't lose.   And ...why I've been so adamant about voting for the GOP to keep from losing to the commies.

Right.  And though the odds of them actually being able to pass this as an Amendment are slim, it was only a 5-4 decision.  As soon as they get 5 votes on the Court again, it's likely gone.  So we cannot let that happen.

You may be right. There are groups on both sides who envision themselves as the arbiters of "truth" and who would exclude all else but their version thereof. It is an egregious loss of principle in favor of what they perceive as a political advantage. In the end, none benefits except the totalitarians.

This is why the right to free speech wasn't about wearing t-shirts which say "F___ You!", but to preserve the right to express political views without repression.

Political correctness has already wounded the concept.
