700 in India rescued from train stuck in monsoon floodwaters

Rescuers in India on Saturday safely evacuated a train carrying 700 people after it got stuck in monsoon floodwaters between two stations near Mumbai, the country's home minister said.

A statement by India's disaster management office in Maharashtra state said the Mahalaxmi Express train got stuck due to flooding of the tracks.

Home Minister Amit Shah said on Twitter that all 700 passengers had been rescued safely.


About 500 passengers were rescued from the train early Saturday, and put on rescue boats. (National Disaster Response Force/The Associated Press)

Badlapur is on the river that flows into the Indian Ocean just north of Mumbai. It looks to be a pretty flat and low-lying area.
