Gingrich: Trump more interested in defining Democrats as radical than 'any particular bill'

By John Bowden - 07/23/19 05:18 PM EDT

Former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) says in a new interview that President Trump has moved away from any focus on legislation towards battling the Democrats ahead of his reelection fight in 2020.

The longtime Trump ally told The New York Times that the president was no longer primarily focused on any policy items, and was rather in full campaign mode.

“I think he doesn’t mind if it happens, but it’s not his primary focus,” Gingrich said of new legislation passing Congress. “His primary focus is to so thoroughly define Democrats as the party of the radical left. I think that matters much more to him than any particular bill.”

Exhibit A:  The latest Budget Battle, after declaring he would not sign another 'one of these'.  Hey, in all fairness, Cruz voted for the last one (his first), maybe that's why he only won by 2.4%.
