Seoul (CNN) — South Korean fighter jets fired warning shots at a Russian military aircraft Tuesday after it violated the country's airspace, the country's defense officials said.

In a statement, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said that the Russian military aircraft twice violated South Korean airspace off the country's eastern coast on Tuesday morning.

The South Korean military said they flew above an island claimed by both South Korea and Japan, first at 9.09 a.m. local time and then again at 9.33 a.m., each time for just a matter of minutes.

Chung Eui-yong, director of South Korea's National Security Office, said that he had sent a "strong" message of complaint to the Russian authorities over the incident.

"We are taking this situation very seriously, and if this kind of action is repeated, we will take even stronger measures," Chung said, without detailing what those measures could be.

Carl Schuster, a former director of operations at the United States' Pacific Command's Joint Intelligence Center, said that shooting a warning shot in the air was "very very serious" and "very, very rare."

South Korea fires 360 warning shots at intruding Russian military aircraft

TOKYO — South Korea said its fighter jets fired hundreds of warning shots at a Russian military aircraft that twice entered its airspace over a group of small islands off its east coast on Tuesday.

Seoul’s Defense Ministry said its jets scrambled after a Russian A-50 early warning and control aircraft violated its airspace over the islands, which are controlled by South Korea but claimed by Japan.

The fighters fired 80 warning shots the first time, and a further 280 shots when the aircraft returned a few minutes later.  Seoul said it was the first time a Russian military plane had violated its airspace, and experts said the incident complicated simmering regional tensions.

360 shots from fighter jets?

Wonder how much that cost the SK defense budget?

Kidding aside, Russia's smartly playing the geo-political war game right now as a Persian Gulf diversion.  Wouldn't be surprised to see some Alaskan incursions next.
I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

Something happened in Alaska in the last several weeks:

I thought it was even a shorter time than happening last May.

First Russian-Chinese air patrol in Asia-Pacific draws shots from South Korea
Andrew Osborn, Joyce Lee

MOSCOW/SEOUL (Reuters) - Russia carried out what it said was its first long-range joint air patrol in the Asia-Pacific region with China on Tuesday, a mission that triggered hundreds of warning shots, according to South Korean officials, and a strong protest from Japan.

The flight by two Russian Tu-95 strategic bombers and two Chinese H-6 bombers, backed up according to Korean and Japanese officials by a Russian A-50 early warning plane, marks a notable ramping-up of military cooperation between Beijing and Moscow.

That is something likely to worry politicians from Washington to Tokyo and could complicate relations and raise tension in a region that has for years been overshadowed by hostility between the United States and North Korea.
