Bloody attacks on shoppers and a pro-democracy lawmaker by unidentified men wielding makeshift weapons at a Hong Kong mall on Sunday left dozens of people in hospital amid growing public outrage at the failure of the city's police force to intervene in a timely manner.

Dozens of men in white shirts gathered near the Yoho Mall, part of the Yuen Long MTR subway station development, at around 6.00 p.m, according to social media posts.

Some wore slogans that read "Protect Yuen Long" and "Guarding our homeland."

There are those who defend Mainland China, who say the CIA helped set up protesters in Tiananmen (you actually can not rule some of that out though, I'm sure it was a popular movement greatly, I do not see how the CIA could have much pull over there in 1989).  Something to keep a watch on.

Xi Jinping is a radical communist, probably second only to Mao.

The difference is that the economy Xi inherited is in much better shape
Xi can now afford weapons and influence to take the South China sea, control of northern India and now, Hong Kong.
Make no mistake about it, Taiwan is coming.

Xi Jinping is not the "cuddly" China leader of the past. He uses the 6-7% growth that they've had for a decade to modernize their military and intelligence operations.  The sooner we cut our economy away from theirs, the better.

The only issue Xi Jinping has is that China's citizens now expect modernization. I worked in China for three months in 2016. They used to dream of eating meat once a week. Now they get that and dream of owning a car instead. So if the Chinese economy can no longer sustain the growth its had recently, the Chinese will be very angry.

The Triads, apparently = organized crime per one of these articles, may have had some members who performed these attacks per articles.

Have Hong Kong's feared triads taken sides in protests? Groups of masked men all wearing white descend on anti-Chinese activists and brutally beat them on another night of violence

Protests began last month in opposition to a bill that would allow Hong Kong residents to stand trial in China.

Demonstrations have ballooned into calls for democracy reforms and an investigation into 'police brutality'

Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas at egg-hurling activists defacing the national emblem during a rally

Triad protesters were seen hitting anti-Chinese protesters with sticks this evening inside trains and platforms

Sunday's rally is the seventh weekend that residents have come out en-masse, sparking city's biggest turmoil since the UK handed back to China in 1997

6 men, some with triad links, held over Hong Kong mob attack
By Associated Press
July 23 at 2:15 AM

HONG KONG — Hong Kong police have detained six men, some with links to triads, following a violent attack on pro-democracy protesters at a subway station that saw dozens injured.

Senior police official Chan Tin-chu said Monday the men, aged between 24 and 54, were held for “unlawful assembly” and is being investigated for taking part in the attack late Sunday night at the subway station in the Yuen Long neighborhood. Some of them are villagers, and their occupation range from drivers and hawkers to renovation workers, he said.

“Some of them have triad background,” he said. “I believe that more...will be detained soon. Police will not condone any form of violence.”

Police are still investigating the motive of the attack, Chan added, without providing further details on the alleged links to the triads, or organized crime.

Never really knew that word, maybe in passing I'd heard it.

So, there thuggery bewilders me some, did they do this for the Chinese government? That's what I'd think. Maybe we will find out more.

Thank you for your input @kidd

Is Beijing using the Triads to destroy the Hong Kong protest movement?
By Rick Moran

Pro-democracy demonstrators in Hong Kong were attacked by dozens of men at two protest sites, injuring 18 and destroying their encampments.

Police arrested 19 of the attackers and identified several as members of the Chinese Triads - gangsters who may have been hired by the mainland Chinese government to do their dirty work for them.

New York Times:

The protesters said the attackers were pro-government gangs, and several protest groups called off planned negotiations with the government in response.

Apparently, this wasn't even the first times, Triads show up, in fact, there was another article, '97, '96 that also listed the Triads back during the days leading up to when UK handed Hong Kong back to China.
