The whereabouts of a Japanese chef who had worked for the father of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for more than a decade have been unknown since around June, sources said.

One unconfirmed report said North Korean authorities detained Kenji Fujimoto after he was accused of revealing classified intelligence on the reclusive regime to outsiders.

Fujimoto had lived in North Korea and worked as a chef for Kim Jong Il for a total of 13 years between 1982 and 2001. Kim Jong Un succeeded his father, who died in December 2011, as the country's top leader.
