10 Jobs Disappearing Due to Technological Advances
« on: July 02, 2019, 02:46:46 am »
Lifehack by Elena Prokopets

Could you have imagined as a kid that Google’s driverless cars and consumer space travel would actually exist when you grew up? And how many more incredible sci-fi inventions are on their way to the mass market? Yet to have enough room for the new, the old sometimes has to go. As our society becomes more and more tech-driven, expect these 10 jobs to disappear in the next couple of years.

1. Newspaper reporter

The future of traditional printed media becomes more and more uncertain with over a million blog posts published daily and a long line of freelance writers competing to pitch the juiciest story to top online publishers. As the advertising revenues shrink, having a permanent staff of reporters with an average salary of $37,090 per year makes deeper holes in the tiny budgets of traditional news outlets.

You are so correct.

Paper consumption in the United States for the last 20 years has increased from 92 million tons to 208 million, a growth of 126%.

I can see farmers (mostly) disappearing. Their children grow up privileged these days,and don't want to farm because they consider it a low-class job despite the wealth it created for them.

A local farmer decided to sell off his farm land this year because his "boy" (in his 30's) wanted a white collar job. Sold off all his equipment already,and has the farm broken up into different sized plots depending on location. The truth is that farm equipment is so expensive these days that if you sell off your equipment you might as well sell off your land because it would be tough to justify spending the replacement cost.

Don't feel too sorry for him,though. He inherited it all from his father,and one of the plots he is selling is 100 acres right on a 4 lane highway on one side,and a large body of water on the other. The side facing the highway is zoned "multi-use",and the other is waterfront property.  Not much danger of him or his "boy" going hungry.

BTW,his "boy" is a total asshat. To the point where even the father admits it now. Only child mama's boy. Nobody has ever accused the father of being lazy,though. If he wasn't farming,he was working at some other trade.

Yes, the 9% decrease in employment may be explained by increasing automation rather than lack of demand for the product.

@Sanguine

Not to mention the 37 grand per year annual salary. WTH wants to spend 4 years in college and then earn 37 grand a year on average?

I spoke to a relative at the Riggs Family reunion. Think it was the 103rd a few years back.
The 109th Rigg Reunion will be held on Labor Day at the Miller City Sportsman Club
In Miller City Ohio.

I spoke with a relative who had been in farming and cattle. Cattle being a shovel business.
Shovel in feed and shovel out shit.

They decided to leave the farm to one member of the family. The others went to college
That way the farm is not segmented into smaller and smaller farms. This is a relatively
consistent practice. Keep the farm in the family with one child and educate the rest in other
areas of interest.

Back in the late 70's and early 80's most of the farmers in the West Texas area where I grew up formed family farm corporations. The corporation bought and held all the machinery and land. The members get together during the winter and decide what they are going to grow the next year, and who is going to be responsible for what acreage. These plans are used to make up a budget and any loans needed to get seed, fuel, fertilizer, etc are done in a package through the family farmcorp.

Yep! The writer did not do a lot of careful thinking on the article. Mail carriers are part of a government bureaucracy. Has anyone ever heard about a government job being eliminated? Too many dues paying union bureaucrats......

I don't know about disappearing, but fast food cook certainly is a job endangered by the $15/hour movement.
If, as anti-Covid-vaxxers claim, https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2021/robert-f-kennedy-jr-said-the-covid-19-vaccine-is-the-deadliest-vaccine-ever-made-thats-not-true/ , https://gospelnewsnetwork.org/2021/11/23/covid-shots-are-the-deadliest-vaccines-in-medical-history/ , The Vaccine is deadly, where in the US have Pfizer and Moderna hidden the millions of bodies of those who died of "vaccine injury"? Is reality a Big Pharma Shill?

Millions now living should have died. Anti-Covid-Vaxxer ghouls hardest hit.

@Joe Wooten

Any farmer these days that has a farm that is more than a "hobby farm" is a fool if he doesn't incorporate.  It just solves so many tax and inheritance problems.

So is dishwasher. Get used to the idea of eating off paper plates and using plastic knives and forks when eating out in the future.

There are a lot of those here in Illinois, where one of the sons got the old family farm, but cannot make a living on 300-400 acres. Either the husband or wife (or both) have a full or part time job outside the farm and work their asses off keeping it solvent.

I dunno about Illinois,but I know the farmers around here make almost as much money from not farming (acreage in the soil bank) as they do farming. One local farmer I talk to almost every day got embarrassed when he ran for county commissioner a couple of years ago,and it was revealed he had pulled in almost 2 million from land in the Soil Bank the previous year. He also has a winery and several other businesses.

Some of the lazy marginal farmers do "insurance farming". They will lay in a crop with the cheapest seed while doing as little work as possible to maintain it, hoping for a weather event that wipes them out and they get an insurance check for the lost crop.

One he missed is "Cashier" McDonalds is moving to ordering kiosks. The walmart near me and Kroger's have installed quite a few "Scan and go" self checkouts. I used to find them annoying, but now they are faster than waiting in line, especially if I just have 1 or 2 items.

...

You know every one of the millions of sons and daughters - myself being one - of farmers who chose other career fields? That statement would be laughably absurd were it not so outrageous. But it is absurd.
