UFOs: Where your state ranks for unexplained sightings
https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/talkingtech/2019/07/02/states-with-most-ufo-sightings/1586103001/

The truth is out there. Extraterrestrials are more likely to visit from the North.

That’s one way, anyway, to interpret the results from a new report on the states with the most unidentified flying object sightings per capita. Washington State topped that list, followed in order by Montana, Vermont, Alaska, and Maine.

Or maybe Northerners just believe more.

So much for Roswell, New Mexico, or the lonely Nevada desert. New Mexico came in 8th on the list; Nevada 13th.

Meanwhile, the states with the least frequent UFO sightings per capita — Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama -- are all down South.

The list was put together by the analysts and space nerds at internet provider SatelliteInternet.com, which culled data from the National UFO Reporting Center and the U.S. Census, to attract attention in time for World UFO Day on July 2. (Yep, there is such a day.)...

Why is Texas last in sightings?

I heard on the radio this morning that it was per capita, and we do live in a large stae.
Also the southern US has less sightings than the north, speculating that this is mostly due to cloud cover.

Well yeah... and dark... You kinda need dark... Per capita where most the population lives in giant cities - You can't see the sky in the cities. Smog in the day and light pollution at night.

Come on out here and lay on a mountain top. What y'all are missing is beyond your ken until you do.
And I guarantee, on any given night, providing it's clear, you will see something in the sky that you will not be able to explain.

The thing that don't make in that is desert rats. Folks out of town. Dark and low humidity, they ought to be able to see, and probably do - Just that they are few in comparison within the per-cap population, I'd reckon.

Cloud cover?  With Montana, Washington & Oregon high on the list?

Our cloud cover is in the winter. Summers are usually bright and clear.

Northwest/Alaska: northern lights might factor into it. (To a lesser extent this might also be the case with the upper New England states.)

Arizona/New Mexico: well, there's a lot of government projects down there so, frankly, I'm a little surprised Nevada isn't that high on the list.
