At least part of the suffering was intentional. Carter had the Liberal viewpoint that America was too big, too rich, and too successful. He felt that Americans needed to suffer, to atone for their sins and to be closer to the suffering nations all over the world. Like Obama after him, Carter felt that America's success was sinful. And most of all, it was not 'fair'.

If you think like a Liberal then you believe in the equal outcomes for all people, regardless of intelligence, ambition, or work ethic. When reality doesn't grant Liberals their fantasy version of reality, Liberals tend to 'force' it to be true, with absurd laws and governmental enforced coercion and confiscation. Liberal Government Motto: If I say that all people of the world must be equal, then I will make it so, whether they like it or not. That is why in Socialist/Communist Governments, everyone not in the chosen elite class of government is equal. They are equal in the sense that they are all poor and starving. That is what the Democrats want for America. To make things equal and 'fair'.

Carter is a joke but for those looking for a reason to dislike the Trump presidency, he gives credence to the "illegitimate president" idea.  And, younger people may not remember his disastrous presidency, but the fact that an ex-president is supporting the idea that Trump didn't really win the election carries a lot of weight.  This is very dangerous.

Well, maybe, maybe not   You might have several Baptist churches, but they may have differing philosophies.  I think Carter was a Baptist from the "Southern Convention" but he changed to a different church from another group with different philosophies.   

In my neighborhood, there are two churches, both called Evangelical, but one is more conservative than the other.

The fundie church I grew up in was BIG on charity and helping de po. Not the poor they knew or were related to,mind you,but were YUGE on helping the unknown poor. The poor that were related to them were poor because it was their own fault,and "they ain't getting none of MY money!".

They were always ready to give the benefit of the doubt to people they didn't know and didn't want to know,but were less generous with relatives and neighbors.

They did want God for president,though.

I was of the persuasion that we didn't bash other people's religions. A handful of atheists on a previous board had made a point of taking shots at Christianity every chance they could get.
