The Republican Party was the distant heir of our early Federalists.
Neither had anything to do w/principled conservatism. Ever!
Our core principled conservative party was the Rural Democrats
of the agrarian South, the party of Jefferson, Madison and Monroe.
Sadly, it was fatally tarred w/slavery and destroyed by our Civil War.
