The University of Southern California may take civil action against Lori Loughlin and her husband because of their alleged role in the college admissions scandal.
The “Full House†star and her husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, were arrested in March on charges of bribing their daughters' way into USC. The $500,000 bribe, paid to William Singer, allowed their daughters to be recruited as members of the USC rowing team.
“It is possible that USC may have civil disputes with one or both sometime in the future,†BJ Trach, the couple’s attorney, wrote in a May 6 letter to federal prosecutors.
This detail was revealed in a motion filed by prosecutors, which noted a potential conflict of interest in the criminal case against Loughlin and her husband.
The firm that represents the couple, Latham & Watkins, represents USC in an ongoing controversy involving the name of their football stadium, which prosecutors argued might constitute a conflict of interest. USC is worried the arrangement “may cause public embarrassment†and “adverse publicity.â€
Loughlin, who pleaded not guilty, faces up to 40 years in prison if found guilty at trial.
Neither Loughlin's lawyer nor USC have yet commented.
