SATs will now contain secret 'adversity scores': Students will be rated on deprivation and crime in effort to level playing field for poor and minority teens - but nobody will be told the numbers

Every student taking the SAT will now be given an 'adversity score' to help equalize the college admissions system for low-income teens
The College Board, which administers the test, established the new system
The new system will use 15 different factors to determine a student's adversity score, based on things such as the crime, poverty rates and home values

Every student taking the SAT will now be given an 'adversity score' to level the playing field between people with different social and economic backgrounds, but critics say children of affluent parents could be penalized by the new system.

The scoring system was established by the national College Board, the nonprofit which administers the test, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The new system will use 15 different factors to weigh a student's adversity score, based on things such as the crime and poverty rates in the neighborhood where the teens grew up.

Other elements of the adversity index include housing values, family median income, whether a student is a child of a single parent, or speaks English as a second language.

This graph breaks down the average (mean) score for all test takers, as well as for those of different races. Source: The College Board

Well I was going to say that Mensa would stop using SAT scores for acceptance, but I see that they already stopped accepting them back in 1994.

Telling the awful truth about the new SAT ‘adversity’ score
By Thomas Lifson

Few people have the audacity to speak the truth about the underlying problem with the efforts to engineer “diversity” – which in practice means that blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans receive a share of jobs, college admissions, income, and other products of achievement at least proportional to their share of the population. Fortunately, Heather Mac Donald of the Manhattan Institute has a lot of guts.

Last night, Ms. Mac Donald appeared on Tucker Carlson Tonight and discussed the newly-announced “adversity score” adopted by the College Board publishers of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).  As explained by the New York Times:

The company announced on Thursday that it will include a new rating, which is widely being referred to as an “adversity score,” of between 1 and 100 on students’ test results. An average score is 50, and higher numbers mean more disadvantage. The score will be calculated using 15 factors, including the relative quality of the student’s high school and the crime rate and poverty level of the student’s neighborhood.

The rating will not affect students’ test scores, and will be reported only to college dmissions officials as part of a larger package of data on each test taker.

The College Board's New 'Adversity Score' Is A Joke
Townhall, May 19, 2019, Paul Jacob

[...]

“The College Board plans to assign an adversity score to every student who takes the SAT,” The Wall Street Journal reported last week, “to try to capture their social and economic background, jumping into the debate raging over race and class in college admissions.”

This year, 50 colleges and universities, including Yale, used these new SAT measures; next year, 150 more will do so. After that, Katy bar the college door.

Students are assessed on 15 not-fully-disclosed factors, things such as the level of crime and poverty in one’s high school and neighborhood, “the educational level of the parents,” and “family stability.”

“An adversity score of 50 is average,” notes the Journal. “Anything above it designates hardship, below it privilege.”

One problem, however, is that, as the song goes, “Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen.” Which, in this case, means the SAT will measure one’s school and neighborhood and home on crime and wealth, but it cannot look at an aspiring young person’s actual personal experience.

It will not judge the content of one’s character, but the character of one’s community. The more beleaguered the household, school and neighborhood in which you reside, using purportedly objective standards, the better for you — at least, in getting into the best universities.

This being a utopian and technocratic system, not a democratic-spirited or market service, students and their parents will not be permitted to know their score. Only the College Board and college admission folks will possess the formula that divines whether or not your student “built that” academic record.

What could go wrong? I seem to recall that in the seventies, at least in California, without coming from a family of firefighters a White male had to score 100% on the exams AND be a Vietnam veteran to even have a chance against certain minorities that were given extra points just because of their ...............

Just another veiled attempt at continuing to impose racial discrimination in college admissions.

Nothing less than official discrimination against whites by our communist politicians.

California passed an Iniative   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996_California_Proposition_209 to prevent raceial preference in admissions. Soe the judges and schools, found work around gimmicks.

Iniative authored by b Ward Connerly, by the way.
